Poker is a card game played by two or more players. It is generally considered a game of skill, but it also involves luck and gambling elements. Each player places a bet, called a “pot,” into the center of the table. These bets are typically made using chips, with one white chip worth the minimum ante or bet and a red chip worth 10 or more whites. Players can choose to call, raise, or fold. A player who calls places his or her chips into the pot equal to the amount raised since the previous player’s turn. A player who raises puts his or her chips into the pot in an amount higher than the current bet, while a player who folds forfeits any money that he or she put down for that round.

The player with the highest hand wins the pot, which is composed of the sum total of all bets placed in that round. This may include the initial pot created by the mandatory bets known as blinds, which are placed into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. A high-ranking hand can be a royal flush, straight, or three of a kind. There are also other combinations of cards that can form a hand, such as a pair, which consists of 2 matching cards of one rank and 1 unmatched card.
