One of the earliest forms of poker was a three-card brag. It was popular during the American Revolution. Nowadays, poker is a community card game that uses a full 52-card deck. Typically, the players deal their cards clockwise around the table.

The dealer makes the first two or three cards face up. After a round of betting, the player on the left of the big blind is the first to act. He or she may raise or check.

A player who folds will forfeit the rights to the pot. Another player who does not fold can call the bet. In some games, the player who calls the bet has a better hand than the player who folded.

Poker can be played with a group of a few people or with a large group of people. Usually, there are no more than six or eight players.

Before the first betting interval, the player who receives the jack is the initial dealer. Each other player must then shuffle the cards.
